P e r s o n a l i t y Look. Let's just get this out of the way. The man known as Genjo Sanzo is an asshole. He's rude, inconsiderate, and utterly tempermental. He can, and will fly off the handle at the smallest of annoyances. His 'companions' annoy him to no end, and he often bitterly bemourns the fate that has forced him to sit through Gojyo's attitude and Goku's idiotcy. Even Hakkai's sometimes over-the-top smiling and tolerance of their companions gets on his nerves. He disregards most Buddhist ideals, and smokes, drinks, and gambles, often at the same time. He refuses to shave his head, and has no problem with violence. He detests children and animals. That being said, there's more to Sanzo then what he lets on. Don't make a mistake, he is a bastard and a meeting with him will either involve the creation of lifelong mental issues or the best cold shoulder existed. But as much as he pretends to be so, he is not heartless. He may refuse to preach Buddha or live by those ideals, but he will not stand aside when another person is in need, and still somehow manages to leave people with changed lives, despite his coarse and often rude manner. He cares strongly for his companions, despite how often he dismisses them and threatens them with violence. Though he openly shows a hatred of children and animals, he does not seem to truly mind the presence of both Kakuryuu and Goku. Despite his tendency towards violence with his companions, he is a cold and rational thinker, and often reserves violence as a last resort in a fight. Sanzo is something of a tormented soul. Beneath his cold exterior, he is riddled with- No, not self-doubt issues, are you mad? Sanzo is perfection- trust issues. He refuses to become too attached to those around him, feeling that the only thing coming out of becoming close to someone only results in pain and suffering. Despite this, however, he has come to see Goku as a surrogate son, and looks out for him. He might whack Goku on the head and lose his temper over the demon child's constant hunger. But god so help anyone who dares to trashtalk the brat or strike at him in Sanzo's presence. As the monks of the temple frequently find out, Sanzo is everywhere, and hears everything, including anything said about his errant guest. Out of the group, he is the closest to Goku, partially because of the time the two have spent together, and partially because of Goku's tendency to look up to the priest. As for the other two members of the party... Let's not get a headache. Sanzo hates Gojyo, and that's that. He hates his lecherous ways, the way he has to go after anything with hips and a bosom, and how he seems to take nothing seriously. That being said, the two of them seem to get along fairly well in a battle. Of course, Gojyo's tendency to pick fights with Goku often winds up igniting Sanzo's short fuse and ending with threats or acts of violence against both Gojyo and Goku. And when it comes to Hakkai... Well, Hakkai is sometimes the only person that can keep Sanzo calm, partially because of Hakkai's own placid temperment. Of course, since there are times that Hakkai seems to be borderline idiotic in his attempts to tune out the two troublemakers, Sanzo finds himself with yet another headache. Still, out of the group, Sanzo's most likely to have a serious conversation with Hakkai. The two of them also share a rather strong dislike of the rain. In many ways, Sanzo is the 'outsider' of the group, being the only 'holy man' in the group, surrounded by demons, or demon-blooded, and the one person who avoids fighting the most. His lack of fighting, however, masks a strong power. Sanzo is the youngest ever to achieve the rank of Sanzo priest, and it's not because of his pretty looks. When forced to fight, Sanzo has shown to be a formidable foe, both physically strong, and bearing two powerful weapons: His banishing gun, and the sutra around his shoulders. Of these two weapons, he often fights with the former, only using the latter when his gun is unusable or Goku's diadem has been broken/removed. The banishing gun, however, is a powerful weapon of it's own, able to quiet angry spirits, kill youkai, destroy cursed objects, and shoot through seals and magic, something no other weapon posessed by his allies can do. Sanzo also is gifted in the fact that even when his temper is at it's worse, he is still able to think coolly, allowing him to be a rational voice in a fight. This also has allowed him to push aside the desire for vengeance or retribution, and to remember the act of mercy to his enemies. He also shows a great deal of dedication to whatever task is at hand, even if he does seem to be blowing it off most of the time. ... Of course, if he wants to, he will still make you hurt. Though he does not believe in deities and is not the epitome of a holy man, he is remarkably resourceful and full of insight. At times he can surprise those around him by speaking the words of a wise man, then reverting right back to the smoking, drinking son of a bitch that everyone knows and loves. Even odder is his connection with animals. Sanzo has shown himself in the past to be able to commune with animals, even talking a raging bear out of attacking the temple he was raised at. He even seems to recognize what Hakuryuu is saying at times, though he refuses to admit it and will pretend like he did nothing at all. Animals in turn seemed to be attracted to him, much to his apparent disgust. Sanzo does not speak about his past, and will either ignore inquiries or react violently. He also does not respond to questions about his abilities. Because of this, none of his allies have found out about his rather... strange ability. Gojyo and Goku have gotten into deep conversations in the past, wondering where Sanzo pulls out his gun, and where he pulls out his paper fan. He might have it in a pocket, or sleeve, or he might be able to... ... Summon weapons. Yeah. Sanzo can summon weapons. Where does he get them? Where are they stored when he doesn't summon them? No one knows. Maybe they're seals in his robes. Maybe it's an aspect of hammer space. Maybe he just creates them from spiritual energy. Maybe he draws upon his allies homicidal tendencies. Either way, Sanzo has access to a wide arsenal of weapons. Now, why does he stick with his little peashooter and not summon up something juicy? ... Because he doesn't fucking want to. Moving on. Other then his apparent asshole tendencies, there's a few other things about Sanzo that are rather peculiar. Of late, he has found himself plagued by strange dreams, and odd moments of de ja vu, something he has been unable to explain, other then the possibility of a really bad beer, or a headache from listening to Goku all day. In these odd moments, he vaguely remembers being called another name, and other fleeting moments that leave him in a cold sweat. He has spoken of this to no one, not even Hakkai and just wakes up in an even worse mood the next day. The second thing to remember about Sanzo? He believes in himself and no one else. |

B i o g r a p h y The child of a government official named Rin Tokou, 51 years old at Sanzo's birth, and a woman named Kouran, 17 years old, the child that grew up to become Genjo Sanzo never met his parents. After his birth, he was placed in a basket and put upon the surface of a river. Before the water could take him to death, the Sanzo priest Koumyou saved him, and brought him to the temple that he resided at, raising the child as his own son. He named the child 'Kouryuu', meaning 'flow of the river', though many of the monks translated it to 'river rat' instead. Growing up, many of the monks looked down on Kouryuu, taunting him and treating him with disdain. Kouryuu... didn't really give a fuck. The only person he cared about in the world was Koumyou. Well, him and the head abbot, Shuei, who had shown the boy kindness as well, despite calling him 'river rat' as well. Shuei often looked out for Sanzo in a way that Sanzo would mirror later on with Goku, punishing the monks that trashtalked the youth and keeping an eye out for him. The two actually had a fairly brotherly friendship, with Shuei often teasing Kouryuu and talking about his studies with him. Outside of Koumyo, Shuei was the only person that Kouryuu truely respected and cared for, leading him to give him the rosemary beads found on him in the basket as an infant. When Shuei questioned this, Kouryuu told him that he had never given anyone anything before, and that he was sure, but that he had to guard them well. That night, when Kouryuu went to Koumyo to recieve his holy name, the two were attacked, leading to Koumyo's death and the theft of the Seiten Sutra. In a council with the other monks, Kouryuu told the others what had happened, and how he had been helpless to save Koumyo from the burglars that took the Seiten Sutra. In the face of the accusations that he stole it, Kouryuu asked for permission to leave the Temple to find the Sutra. The head abbot told him that the blame was on all of them, and that he would not place the burden solely on Kouryuu's shoulder. Kouryuu, however, puzzled all of them he cryptically stated that the scriptures belonged to him. When asked to explain, Kouryuu reached up to take the bandage off of his forehead, revealing the crimson bindi, and revealed the name given to him by Koumyo Sanzo as Genjo Sanzo, the youngest ever to achieve such a rank. The mark, called the crimson chakra, was a symbol passed from Sanzo to Sanzo, widely believed to only be worn by those chosen directly by the Heavens. Despite the protests of some of the other monks, he was crowned as Priest Toua Genjo Sanzo the 31st, formal heir to the Seiten and Maten Sutras, two of the five founding parchments of Heaven and Earth. The next day, he left the temple with the Maten Sutra, in search of the Seiten Sutra. It is unclear where the newly-named Genjo Sanzo went. Eventually an older Sanzo found himself in the Orin Temple, asking the Three Aspects for information on the whereabouts of the Seiten Sutra. He was told to stay in East City, as his eyes were 'dead', and 'would not even recognize it'. Albeit grudgingly, he stayed. During his stay, he suffered horrible nightmares about his past, and woke during the night. He encountered the head priest of the temple smoking, something Sanzo did not approve of at the time. He talked with the priest, who jokingly referred to him as a demon due to him coming out in the moonlight and his golden hair, as Sanzo shut himself away from the others in the day and prayed. The other monks commented that he did not recite any sutras during the time. Soon, the head priest spoke with him again after more nightmares and offered him his box of cigarettes. Sanzo reluctantly took them. A few nights later, a group of men attacked the temple to take Genjo Sanzo's life. The head priest, Jikaku, lied to the attackers, claiming to be Sanzo and was felled, smoking one of his cigarettes. His final words, mirroring what Koumyo told him, enrages the young Sanzo priest. After attacking the men, a youkai revealed himself among the attackers. The fight soon came down to Sanzo holding his gun in the youkai's mouth, and Sanzo demanding whether or not he knew where the missing sutra is. When the youkai refused to answer, he killed him, stating "I'll live enough... for ALL you bastards." After that night, he took the position of head of the temple. To his relief, his nightmares have vanished. Then his relief faded as he realized that something else had replaced it. A strange 'voice' calling to him. Before long, Sanzo finally gave in and set out to find the soure of the mysterious voice, wanting to find the person responsible and silence them. Travelling to the mountains, Sanzo continues his search, learning of a stragne legend about the mountain. Ignoring their advice, the stubborn priest continued onward and upward, encountering a prison at the peak of the mountain, housing a young boy. Demanding to know what he wanted, the kid didn't seem to know what he wanted and claimed to have been calling no one. After a really crack-tastic conversation that left him confused, Sanzo reached his hand out, taking Goku and freeing him. With Goku under his wing and a personal nuisance to his side, Genjo Sanzo took on the duties of the head priest. Then, one day, Sanzo found himself presented with the task of arresting the man known as Cho Gonou for the crime of killing one thousand people, given to him by the Three Aspects. Tracking down the man, he found him in the care of a half-demon named Sha Gojyo. The red-haired man tried to keep Gonou hidden, but Sanzo, already well-informed by people in the surrounding area, already had the information he needed. A fight ensured, ending when Gonou stole Sanzo's gun, and pleaded for more time before leaving. The three left speak about how to find Gonou (After Gojyo bitches about Goku's eating, of course), with Goku remarking on how Gonou did not seem evil, Sanzo stating that a person does not need to be evil to kill, and Gojyo ending the train of thought by saying that Gonou would probably die after his task was done, as he he 'seemed' the type. Sanzo reveals then that he never intended to kill him, only capture him, and actually seemed disturbed by the notion of Gonou dying. As Sanzo and Goku set out to find him, Gojyo decides to join them, saying that "...if letting him die is the kind thing to do... Then I... must be one selfish bastard..." Eventually, they manage to track down Gonou. This part of the story, Sanzo refuses to tell, seeing it as someone else's story, and not his own. In the end, however, Sanzo recited a sutra at Gojyo's insistence. Before doing so, however, he stated that "...when I read a sutra... It's not for the dead...", introducing the idea of Saiyuki, to live, to the group. Under the light of the rising sun, Gonou finds a chance to live again. Taking Gonou into custody, he takes him back to the temple for his trial, and speaks on his behalf before the Three Aspects. Encountering Gojyo again, Sanzo rather bluntly told him that Cho Gonou is dead. Later, after Gojyo has encountered Gonou, Sanzo finds Gojyo and Gonou at the Orin Temple, where Gonou reveals himself to be Cho Hakkai. Accused of lying, Sanzo just flat-out told him that Gojyo jumped to his own conclusion and that Buddhism forbids killing. And short story after that, the newly-renamed Cho Hakkai convinced Sha Gojyo to let him move in with him, and Ganjo Sanzo and Son Goku returned ot the temple. To this day, Sanzo often encounters Hakkai and Gojyo still, and often ends up in arguments and fights with Gojyo. Honestly, he seriously hates the guy. But of late, he has secluded himself more and more within the temple, speaking with the Three Aspects about a danger come to pass... |

R o l e p l a y i n g ... S a m p l e The scent of incense almost overwhelmed his sense of smell, though he managed to suppress the grimace that tugged at his lips. Pressing his hands together, he leaned forward, bowing to the smokey haze in front of him, his violet-eyes half-lidded. The golden crown of the Sanzo priest rested on his golden head, glinting in the faint, shimmering light. Like always, he wore his cream robes, the scent of cigarettes lingering on them. The sutra over his shoulders seemed to weigh heavy on him today. Then, by the light of the fire, the Three Aspects appeared. Slowly, he lifted his head, listening to the words they spoke... The lighter clicked, a flame appearing. Bringing it forward, cupping a hand around it to prevent the obnoxious wind from knocking it out, he hovered it over the end of the cigarette, waiting. A moment later, the lighter was gone and he was inhaling, letting the smoke drift from his lips as his violet eyes gazed at the heavens. The Seven Sins... The Three Aspects wanted him to, of all things, try to find them, and combat them. He snorted, shifting in his perch. "I could have told them that it was everywhere." Despite the sarcastic remark, he still gazed pensively at the ground now. Even the Three Aspects were uncertain about the darkness he could feel looming over the horizon... "Fuck, I hate going on trips." |
